ComicsFlix 2018 Top 20 Preview

Christmas is over, new resolutions broken, back to work, study or everyday life – what is there to look forward to. Here’s the ComicsFlix Top 20. Let us know yours.

20

SUPERHERO MOVIES & TV SHOWS Superhero movies and TV shows. Lots of them including New Mutants, Ant Man, Infinity War, Black Panther, Deadpool, Aquaman, Venom, Dark Phoenix, Black Lightning, Preacher, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Krypton, Titans, Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Luke Cage. Phew! Going to throw Star Trek Discovery and Orville in here to provide lots of Cosplay material.

19

SPIDER-MAN

Spider-Man. Animated. Well, Homecoming was a surprise, in that it was, well, quite good. So this should be fun – but will people accept more Miles Morales than Peter Parker Spider-Man?

18

WATCHMAN

Doomsday Clock. Okay, okay, we get it. Creators rights and introducing Watchman to the DC Universe is an issue BUT if it welcomes a new generation to the original source material isn’t that also a good thing? Please debate…

Watch out for regular updates on the new Watchman HBO TV series too!

17

DAN DARE

The latest Original Dan Dare collection from Titan continues in May with ‘Earth Stealers’. The Peter Milligan series ‘He Who Dares’ is collected in April. You can catch DD in copies of ‘Spaceship Away’ throughout the year. Any more audio adventures? We’d like to think so. Any Pat Mills and Ian Kennedy 80’s Dare reprints? That’s what we want (and maybe some classic Dan Dare reprints, as second hand prices on eBay are crazy!)

16

HARRY POTTER UNIVERSE

The Harry Potter universe continues with a sequel to the enjoyable Fantastic Beasts. Who knows, Johnny Depp will possibly be in a movie that won’t tank at the box office!

15

80 YEARS OF THE BEANO

Is Dennis no longer a menace? All publicity is good publicity for DC Thomson as recent media reports highlight 80 years of the Beano and their continued plans for online and TV dominance for their most successful characters. Who knew they would be so ‘hip’. Make mine DC (Thomson).

14

KRYPTON

We’ve mentioned several superhero movies and TV shows but this interests us the most. You look at it and on paper it shouldn’t work. It could be another Powerless. But it might just be a surprise hit. Krypton Chronicles was one of the first US Comics I read, so it’s peaked my interest to at least give it a go. Will you?

13

SUPERMAN AT 80.

Is Superman no longer a menace? No, wait, wrong comic! Is it a bird, is it a plane, no, it’s Superman at 80. DC has lots of celebrations planned, including a £20 issue of Action 1000. Wow! The Man of Steel is remembered fondly in our comic loving hearts with ‘Superman The Movie’ still standing up as one of the best superhero movies of all time. Catch our twitter hashtag @comicsflixukus #supermanat80 for some slightly cheaper celebrations than Action 1000! Up, up and away…

12

A WRINKLE IN TIME

ComicsFlix loves a time travel or alternative history story. This could easily have been Outlander, Timeless, the Man In The High Castle or JK Simmons ‘Counterpart’ but ‘A Wrinkle In Time’ peaked our interest and edged then all out of the number 12 spot. Based on the 1962 novel by Madeline L’Engle. A stellar cast and inter dimensional time travel is getting us very excited for this movie, released in March.

11

WESTWORLD 2

Undoubtably one of the best TV shows of 2017, even if times it felt like an extended version of ‘Groundhog Day’, we cannot wait to see the second series. Why? Well, before we get into our top 10 take a moment to watch the best ComicCon TV trailer ever made here.

10

GOOSEBUMPS:HORRORLAND

People of a certain age without kids probably don’t understand why this sequel to the original Jack Black Movie is in our top 10. People who do will understand. Rumours are Black might not return to Goosebumps, which would be a blow for the kids who like Horror-lite.

9

MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Take a spoon full of sugar (or a packet full of popcorn) and hope that Emily Blunt brings the magic of Mary Poppins back to the big screen for a whole new generation. Keep your eyes pealed for a Dick Van Dyke cameo after his Night In The Museum duties. We loved his cockney accent, by the way!

8

LOST IN SPACE

We can’t remember totally disliking the Matt Le Blanc 1998 Movie nor the premise of the Family Robinson’s 1960’s TV series predicament about being, er, Lost In Space. It also had a cool robot. Coming to Netflix in 2018 Lost In Space makes our top 10.

7

GOOD OMENS

Neil Gaiman. Terry Pratchett. A cast of great actors. And all six episodes of this mini series on Amazon penned by Gaiman himself. We are gonna stop there.

6

MOVIE DREDD v JUDGE DEATH

You haven’t got long to wait to see the story we all wanted to see on the big screen. The Karl Urban movie Dredd meets Judge Death in the Megazine in mid January 2018. There is a plethora of 2000AD goodies coming your way in their 41st year including the Hatchette reprints, some classic UK comics from the new Rebellion archives, Halo Jones remastered, a collection of the Dredd / Batman stories and more.

5

ROY OF THE ROVERS

Reprints Of Classic British Comics is all very well and good but we loved the ‘Scream and Misty’ special in 2017. We are equally looking forward to the ‘Roy of the Rovers’ reboot for the start of the 2018 football season. Follow all the latest transfer window developments on twitter @royoftherovers

4

X-FILES

Already showing on Fox in the US we hope the continuing adventures of Mulder and Scully in the ‘X Files’ comes to the UK soon. Sadly it looks like this could be the last series as Gillian Anderson has indicated she will not return to the show. Enjoy the spooky goings on while it lasts.

3

READY PLAYER ONE

‘Stranger Things’ has brought about a nostalgia trend and we think Spielberg’s movie ‘Ready Player One’, which takes us to a virtual world of our favourite characters from screen and video games, is going to be a big success. Will we see Tomb Raider and Wreck It Ralph in there too?

2

HAN SOLO / INCREDIBLES 2

It’s cheating, We know. But we couldn’t decide which movie to go for so we thought it’s our top 20 list we can do what we like. Ron Howard took over Director duties for ‘Han Solo’ mid shoot following ‘creative differences’ between Disney and the original directors and it was also suggested Alden Ehrenreich was struggling with stepping into Harrison Fords shoes. We can understand for any actor that is like going against the whole galactic empire without a lightsabre, so we are holding our breath for him. But fear not, for Disney will make oodles more cash with the sequel to the great superhero Pixar animated Incredibles. It’s been 14 years since the first movie was made. Why did it take so long?

Finally, in at number one for the ComicsFlix Top 20 For 2018….

1

DOCTOR WHO

Brilliant.

Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor with Chris Chibnall as the new series producer.

What could go wrong? Except falling out of the Tardis and hurtling to the ground to your untimely next regeneration.

And on that cliffhanger…
