25 years of Vertigo

Happy 25th Birthday to Vertigo from all at ComicsFlix.

This DC imprint was created in 1993. Vertigo was to be a new creative home for the wave of DC Comics that were suggested for mature readers and for more offbeat titles, many of them being created by UK writers and artists. It was an imprint for Comics to ‘grow up’, as they already were in mainland Europe.

The senior editor of the line was the talented Karen Berger. The series of Comics started with a Death – the popular character from Neil Gaiman’s ‘Sandman’ series. ‘The High Cost Of Living’ storyline was followed by ‘Enigma’ by Peter Milligan and one of our favourite titles ‘Sandman Mystery Theatre’.

Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s ‘V for Vendetta’ was published under the Vertigo imprint. ‘Books of Magic’, said to be a possible influence of Harry Potter (along with 2000ADs ‘Summer Magic’), had an ongoing series under the imprint. Natural characters from the DC Universe found their way there such as Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, Black Orchid, Doom Patrol and Animal Man. Vertigo also published one off graphic novels with art by creators such as Kyle Barker and Dave McKean.

The imprint was restructured in 2016 with some series and characters coming back to a more mature ‘DC Universe’. A number of the characters created for Vertigo have recently been developed for TV and film, such as Hellblazer, Preacher and Lucifer.

To celebrate we thought it would be great to share with you some of the wonderful characters and art that has made this imprint so entertaining over the last 25 years.
